If the fathers want to practice, we have a short instruction from our children's hairdresser Robin.
There is also a short video on our site, where Robin gives some tips on braiding.

What do you need to braid hair?
First, prepare the items you need for combing and braiding the hair. Basically you do this in a way that your daughter is distracted and sits still, for example in the morning at the breakfast table so that she is distracted by the food and drink. What you can use is:

  • borstel
  • fine comb, possibly with iron tip
  • spray bottle with water
  • fabric elastic band

You use fabric elastics, because they damage the hair less than a plastic elastic. On the website of Rollebol childcare centers you will find an instruction from Robin Mens in which she explains a few things.

The preparations
First, spray the hair wet with water, just tap water with nothing added. Because you make it wet, it is easier to brush through and the hair is less likely to break. Depending on whether you are going to make one or two braids, part the hair in the middle. This time make one braid. With two braids, tie one half while working the other side.

Just braid it
When you are going to braid, you start by gathering a tuft of hair. You don't start at the very front as you don't think it looks that nice from the front. Start separating behind the ears, your daughter has a kind of natural part there that you hold to make a semicircle.

Use two fingers to make three equal tufts of this strand, which you hold in one hand, spread between your fingers.

With the other hand, grab a strand from the side (it doesn't matter left or right) and knock it over the middle strand and become yourself in the middle.

  • The easiest way is to let go of the middle tuft.
  • Then you start on the other side and fold it over to the middle.
  • After twice you will grab tufts from the side. Do that with your fingers, this is often slightly easier than with a comb. If you want to have the hair really tight, you can also do it with a comb.
  • From the side, take a tuft that you smooth out and combine with the tuft it's now your turn to bring in. Do the same on the side until you have reached the bottom. Then you continue as you normally do with a braid and tie an elastic at the end.

There are different types of braids. In addition to the standard braiding, many more variants are possible.
